Power confusion

Having enjoyed two glorious days of weather, including both evenings with enough wind to keep the midges at bay and enough sunshine to keep the temperature pleasant without being too warm to sleep, I walked home last night with a wonderful sunset setting over the Glensanda hills and the thought of a power outage was the last thing on my mind. That was until just before one when I was woken by an alarm letting me know that there had been a power cut. When I tried to contact the hotel by phone this too was dead so it was up and off to see what could be done. In reality all was quiet at the hotel, only the night porter was around and as I walked in the back door Chay arrived, concerned by the lack of contact as normally even when the power goes down the phones works and we can remain in touch.

So within a few minutes the generator was on and all was back to a feeling of normality and it was time to contact the power company. As ever they were quick to react and within the hour engineers were on site to the problem and by 3 we were back on our mains supply and little damage had been done. However this morning in the cold light of day the investigation must begin. The first possibility is that the fuse back off the island was hit by lightening, a little unlikely given the weather, next the chance that a bird has hit the wires, so a walk of the lines today should reveal if there is any sign of damage and thirdly and probably most likely to be accepted is just that it is one of those things!

This means that if all is OK today and no signs of it reoccurring then it will just be put down as having happened and hope it does n not happen again. It is certainly unusual to happen on a dry, warm evening when everybody is in bed as McPherson's law says these things happen on a wet windy night at about 8.00 in the evening just as we are about to serve dinner! ! Anyway, its back to resetting manual time clocks that have lost an hour last night and making sure that alarm clocks are reset and  lets see and hope that it was just a one off.
